Softball Cricket

Get Involved

If you're new to cricket, haven't played for a while or don't want to run around in pads and a helmet, softball cricket could be the game for you. And if you live in South Birmingham, you're a woman over 18 and fancy giving it a try, you're in luck! We run softball sessions each Friday evening throughout the summer at Kings Heath Cricket Club.

What Is Softball Cricket?

Women's softball cricket is a variation of cricket designed to be more accessible and introductory, particularly for women and girls. Here's a breakdown of its key features:

  • Simpler format: Compared to regular cricket, softball cricket uses a softer ball, making it easier to hit and safer to play. Games are also shorter and typically last around an hour.
  • Team size: Teams are smaller, with around six to eight players. This allows everyone to get more involved in batting, bowling, and fielding.
  • Batting:  Batters usually bat in pairs, taking turns hitting from opposite ends of the wicket.
  • Focus on participation: The emphasis is on having fun and learning the game, rather than intense competition.
  • Popularity:  Softball cricket is particularly popular in England and Wales, where it's used to introduce women to the sport. There are festivals and leagues specifically for women's softball cricket.

Matches

Depending on squad size, we participate in a range of festivals and leagues across Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Matches are usually on a Thursday, with festivals on a Sunday.

What Do I Need?

Softball cricket is played with a lighter, slightly squishy ball, plastic bats, and stumps. We'll provide this equipment. You need to wear comfortable sports attire. When we compete, we try to all wear navy tops. You can also buy a training top from our online store.

When & Where?

We train on Fridays throughout the summer from 6:30-8:00pm on our pitch at Kings Heath Cricket Club. Parking is available and we often stay for a drink in the clubhouse afterwards, though there is no obligation to do this.
